This CD-ROM collection contains 675 images of ships, aircraft, major weapons systems and other equipment used by United States military forces. The purpose of the collection is to provide Depart- ment of Defense (DoD) activities with a ready source of images to support operational, training, education, public affairs, and briefing requirements. Each image has an associated caption which provides system/equipment nomenclature and background data. Convenient browser software is included to make it easy to find and use the images and their associated captions. The browser software will run on either a PC-Windows or Macintosh system. This image collection was compiled in two selectable resolutions, TIFF and the higher resolution JPEG for- mat. All images are cleared for public release and approved for unrestricted use and publication. Defense Image Digest is a publication of the Defense Visual Information Center (DVIC), March ARB, Califor- nia, and contains images selected from among the thousands archived there. It is the DVIC's intent in the future to publish updated and progressively more comprehensive editions of this collection. The DVIC's mission is to store and safeguard irre- placeable DoD motion and still media records, and to ensure the records are accessible to DoD, other Federal and state agencies, and the American public. The DVIC is part of the American Forces Information Service, a field activity of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs), and is supervised by the Director, Defense Visual Information.
